Point Reyes Light publisher Robert Israel Plotkin this past week told Marin Judge Jack Sutro that competition from the online Bodega Bay Navigator is “damaging or destroying” the newspaper Plotkin bought in November.

I for one would hate to lose Dave's voice in West Marin. I already miss it!

I can't see how the online newspaper is competition for the Pt. Reyes Light. I think there is plenty of room for both.

I can understand a non-competete clause is reasonable but this doesn't seem like competition. They are very different.

If the non-compete clause doesn't prevent Dave from writing for newspapers published outside Marin that sell in Marin, e.g., the San Francisco Chronicle, how can Robert Plotkin claim that can't write for an onlline newspaper because it is read in Marin?

Understand this: The more attention Plotkin gets, good or bad, he loves it and feeds on it. It would be ideal if people stopped writing letters to the Light when they're upset or pissed off. It's the attention he craves (eg, he probably reads this site and doesn't care what is said only that he's discussed)not the right or wrong of what he does. So the worst thing that could happen to him would be if people started ignoring him. I know it's hard to do because he has the monopoly on the major public communication in WM, but it would be great if the word could be spread. Maybe his paper is necessary for advertising so people still need to do that, but the letters (or being available to his interns for interviews) should stop. And his wife? She's nice but it's a good cop/bad cop thing- He can do his thing and she may smoothe things over sometimes but that just lets him do it all over again. Remember, she's his business partner in the paper (the VP, per the masthead)- and in other income-earning things in San Diego, where he's from. More later.....

IT’S QUESTIONABLE WHAT HIS INTERNS EVEN LEARN FROM HIM OF ANY QUALITY (ALTHOUGH SINCE THEY'RE NEW ANY ADVICE WOULD QUALIFY AS 'LEARNING'). HE’S A NOVICE HIMSELF. WITHOUT HIS FATHER’S MONEY TO BUY HIM AN AWARD-WINNING NEWSPAPER, HE’D STILL BE FREELANCING PIECES TO GET HIMSELF NOTICED BY QUALITY PAPERS. HE’LL EVENTUALLY LEAVE BECAUSE IT’S PRETTY CLEAR HE DOESN’T THINK THIS IS BIG ENOUGH FOR HIM AND ISN’T WHERE “THE ACTION” IS. AND HIS SEMI-PRIVATE COMMENTS SHOW A GUY WHO REALLY DISLIKES AND DISRESPECTS THE COMMUNITY HE’S SUPPOSEDLY PUBLISHING THE PAPER FOR. HE JUST LET GO HIS MANAGING EDITOR, A WELL-LIKED GUY WHO CARED ABOUT STANDARDS AND THE COMMUNITY--NEEDLESS TO SAY PLOTKIN VIEWED HIM AS A BRAKE ON PLOTKIN'S EXCESSES AND TABLOID MENTALITY. HE LIKES TO WRITE ARTICLES ABOUT WORLD AFFAIRS, EG, AN ARTICLE IN MAY-JUNE 2006 FOR U MISSISSIPPI ON CHINA, ID'G HIMSELF AS EDITOR/PUBLISHER. THE LIGHT IS JUST A STEPPING STONE TO BURNISH HIS CREDENTIALS AND BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY BY THE JOURNALISM WORLD AS THE FORMER OWNER OF A PAPER, WHEN HE LEAVES- AND HE WILL ONCE HE'S READY, AFTER HARMING THE COMMUNITY HE'S PUBLISHED FOR-
